SCANN - scotoma classification using artificial neural networks.
This project is granted by the fortüne program of the medical department at the University of Tübingen. We have a clinical research partner in the University Eye Hospital, Dept. II. Our aim is to develop a computer-assisted system for the classification and interpretation of visual field test results.
- In the first step we use different rasters and methods of investigation to develop an automatic assignment of visual field test results to known classes of scotoma.
- Furthermore we analyse the relation between certain neuroophthalmologic diseases and typical correlated visual field loss.
- We aim at developing a better analysis of time series than commonly used examiner-dependent procedures.
- We use evolutionary strategies to optimize the examination procedure.
Artificial neural networks implemented in the Stuttgart Neural Network Simulator (SNNS) are used in the areas
- pattern recognition
- time series analysis
- and prognosis.
Such a system will help to improve the standardisation and quality of visual field interpretation. A large database of visual field data with high spatial resolution is provided by the department of Ophthalmology. This department has gained experience in perimetry for many years.
