Burg Hohenzollern

Castle Hohenzollern is located on top of Mount Hohenzollern approximately 30km away from Tübingen. The original castle was constructed in the first part of the 11th century. It was destroyed in 1423 after an almost one year long siege by the imperial cities of Swabia. From 1453 to 1461 the castle was rebuilt. It served as a refuge to the Swabian Hohenzollern family. The castle deteriorated in the 18th century because it was thought to have lost its strategic importance. Only the chapel remains from the medieval castle. A third castle was built on top of Mount Hohenzollern by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV between 1846 and 1867. Today, the castle contains the Crown of Wilhelm II and some of the personal items from Frederick the Great.
