Dear Holger:
Warren Sarle has compiled a FAQ for NN's. The FAQ has a list of
different NN simulators (along with a short description of each).
Look at the following URL:
ftp://ftp.sas.com/pub/neural/FAQ.html
Also, comp.ai.neural-nets newsgroup has a very good discussion
on NN's. U can also look into some archives at http://www.dejanews.com.
A lot of companies announce their NN simulators on the above newsgroup.

Just a note, among all the free NN simulators out there, I have 
found SNNS to be very versatile. PDP++ is also very good (PDP++
has better  technical support than SNNS; however, I have been 
using SNNS for quite sometime now. It takes a while to get used
to some of the English syntax used in the SNNS simulator. However,
it's a really great piece of software.)
